Mini Dreams and some big steps

I have spent a whole lot of the last one year pondering over- what I can do, what I want to do and what could have been if I had acted instead of thinking the other two. Time is running out real fast. The window for me keep my dreams intact and not screw up my career is becoming smaller and smaller.

The Class Mini 6.50 is a pretty boat at the sight of it. Its exactly 21ft long, as long as our home built seabirds. Seabirds, the class I spent most of my time sailing. But the familiarity ends up. However the size gives me enough confidence that I can make passages around with that boat. That boat also does not require the amount of sponsorship money I have been looking for. Its the next best logical step to take if I have to make it to a point from where a serious circumnavigation attempt can be launched.

The Mini is within range of what I get paid today. If I save up enough and get good bargains on building material I might be able to get the construction going. A few loans or donations from here and there could just help me finish the boat and get it into the water.

What next after spending all your life savings on a boat? 2013 Mini Transat is far enough for me to take a shot at. Small passages like Vizag-Port Blair, Mumbai- Male, Mumbai- Galle and Mumbai- Dubai/Abu Dhabi can easily be achieved. 3 Months on construction and then there will be no limits to what can be achieved. The Mini 6.50 seems like a smaller version of the Open 40, 50 & 60 and hence is a suitable boat the gain enough offshore experience in. The various designs available in the market and from what I see the build will not be more than 1200hrs. Space can be arranged, worst case I believe I have enough friends who would we willing to lend their garages for the build.

So now its back to spending more man hours researching and getting quotes for materials. Have to really make the order for the plans regardless of my financial situation. Waiting eagerly for the January salary which will be completely spent in buying the plans. Time to get my ass moving and building. There is no more room for complacency and for delays. Its going to be make it or break it in its true sense.

A beginning towards the End

Finally a viable option has arrived. When I thought everything was lost and my dream would just remain just another dream; a plan has been finalized and designs for a boat will be ordered soon.

The Didi43 Pilot is a very sturdy option and hopefully will be a good companion for the long journey. The journey of a similar boat Blue Pearl gives me confidence to take this boat anywhere I would want to go. I will get in touch with Dudley soon and start following up on some custom changes I will be requiring to the design to make it from a boat needed for a family and make it a yacht I can take around the world.

Bernard Moitesseir was motivation while making my decision. His exploits with Joshua and Tamata are sailing legends. A metal boat fits the bill perfectly. Funding has partially started flowing in and plans are slowly materializing.

The Gods have shown mercy again, at a time when I was going to give up this plan seems something more achievable.

Global Ocean Race 2013-14

The Global Ocean Race is fast becoming the premier ocean race and also is one of the most affordable for sailors around the world.

The organizing authority of the Global Ocean race has decided to open the 2013-14 race for single handed crews.

So now with the preso's coming up for the final proposal for sponsorship, my aims are becoming very clear.
1. A circumnavigation starting mid 2012, complete it well within 200 days, pick up enough experience on the way and then
2. Make it to as many small races before the Global Ocean race and then
3. Make it to the start line of the Global Ocean race 2013-14 on 10th November 2013.

Dreaming the above is the easier part. The hard part comes with convincing sponsors in time to stick to the schedule and also to continue supporting as I am out on the water.

A new website will be up very soon and I expect to the placing the order for the boat by year end. Whatever will happen till then only Neptune knows. Till then its time to hit the sea birds.

Have not heard from Dilip Donde or Abhilash Tomy about what the future beholds with Mhadei, but my attempt will be meet up with these men soon to discuss some future plans. Keeping up with my planned schedule will also mean going faster than these men.

From now on we are a few people working towards getting the sponsorships in place. Feel great with the support coming from Jayakumar and Santosh. These guys have come up with some great ideas and have really given the much required push for me to even start dreaming about ever being on the water.

Stay tuned on this blog, I will be more active now and the new website should come up very soon.

Sailor of the month – January 2011

Gaurav Shinde (EMESA) - Sailor of the month

Hyderabad: While all the youth sailors in the country are trying hard in fleet racing, Gaurav Shinde has already set new heights in offshore racing. Winning gold in the recently concluded offshore race has made him the only sailor to have won both the individual and overall legs of the offshore nationals. He had won the first leg of the race in its first edition in 2008.

This 24 year old high sea explorer from Google is also the youngest sailor the offshore championships have seen so far. Apart from his offshore national title this year, he holds two national titles in lightning class and is currently on theYAI events committee.
